EPIC Charter Schools is looking for an innovative team member with a background in journalism to lead an internal initiative for our organization. The person in this position should be self-motivated with strong communication skills. The Director of Epic News will work directly with students to launch a news network staffed entirely by students that will primarily gather and report news utilizing digital, broadcast and print mediums, as well as social media and related applications. EPIC anticipates that the news network will allow its student journalists to compete in state competitions and their work used as the basis or the full content for other journalistic outlets. Newsgathering will occur from across the entire state and in the same communities where EPIC students live, which is inclusive of all 77 counties.

Minimum Qualifications

Proven experience as a journalist, editor or producer with experience in at least one and demonstrative knowledge of broadcast, print and online mediums
Excellent organizational, leadership and interpersonal communication skills
High level of attention to detail
Proficiency with MS Office and Google platforms
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communication or relevant field required; Masters degree preferred
Candidate must be able to pass the state-mandated background check for public school employees.
Proficiency with Facebook, Facebook Live, Twitter, Instagram and emerging social networks.

Main Duties/Primary Responsibilities

Actively participate in the success of Epic Charter School
Adhere to laws, policies, procedures and ethical standards of Epic Charter School
Leverage significant journalistic experience, including managing multi-platform news. Knowledge of public media news programming standards, values and style. Broad knowledge of local and regional issues. Experience in broadcast production, web content, news writing and news editing.
Demonstrate strong leadership skills, including the ability to build an effective team, train aspiring journalists, collaborate across channels and platforms, adapt to change, champion innovation, effectively communicate orally and in writing, possess active listening skills, develop collaborative partnerships, set goals and achieve results.
Possess strong interpersonal skills including collaboration, professionalism and strong consultative skills conducive to building and maintaining positive relations with administrators, co-workers, staff, faculty, and students.
Strong analytical and research skills; ability to gather, evaluate, and to develop well-reasoned conclusions and recommendations
Developing and executing strategies, objectives, and priorities while leading various initiatives that align with the core strategy of Epic Charter School
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside of Epic with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Demonstrate the ability to teach students to apply the effective written and oral communication skills that are critical to the success of the Epic News Network to any of their chosen endeavors and why that has value even if a career in journalism is not pursued.
