A legacy station and market leader located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, KTUL-TV News Channel 8 has an immediate opening for an experienced, proven News Director. This is an incredible opportunity to join a 67-year old ABC affiliate, located in the lovely, southern-most part of the mid-west.

The ideal candidate has a keen eye for content and has the proven ability to grow viewership across multiple platforms. You are a fearless leader, innovative and embrace change.  You are someone who can, teach, coach and mentor our talented group of journalists and help them to develop their storytelling skills.

Additionally, the News Director is responsible for leading teams, developing strategies in our quest for unique, enterprising content that connects with the community and helps to build audience on a consistent basis.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the stations’ news operations; developing and implementing measurable strategies and tactics for audience growth across multiple demographics; setting budgets; establishing goals and directing staff producing 30 weekly hours of local news.
  • Communicate your vision consistent with company strategy.
  • Initiating, managing and growing content delivery on multiple platforms.
  • Working closely with local and corporate management to establish News content, philosophy and direction.
  • Reviewing daily newscasts to ensure quality control and brand compliance, subsequently providing feedback to news staff.
  • Recruit, hire and negotiate contracts for News department personnel.
  • Collaborate with GM and relevant Department Head staff to develop marketing plans that help to support our brand “Standing up for What is Right”, establish and achieve ratings goals and other critical KPI’s.
  • Approve all newsroom employee decisions.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Ability to manage multiple hours of daily newscasts and a proven track record of success building winning news organizations.
  • At least ten years professional journalism experience and deep knowledge of the ethics and practices of journalism, including libel and privacy laws.
  • At least seven years of editorial experience, with at least five years in news management or applicable expertise.
  • Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgement, journalistic ethics and libel laws.
  • Having working knowledge of federal, state and local laws impacting operations.
  • Proven and effective leadership skills; fosters open dialogue, empowers others, addresses conflict quickly and directly.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience editing enterprise, in-depth, long-form journalism on television and digital platforms.
  • Understanding of digital platforms as crucial and coequal with broadcast platforms.
  • Knowledgeable with trends in emerging media and community engagement as they relate to journalism.
  • Analyze and respond to trends affecting the industry and DMA.
  • Experience working across department lines in an organization.
  • Strong fiscal experience for both operational and capital expenditures.
