Fascinated by television in larger markets, Helen Alvarez Smith set her sights on owning and operating Tulsa’s first television station. She obtained a financial partner and an FCC license, negotiated contracts for equipment, studios, transmitter and tower space, and on October 15, 1949, KOTV went on-theair. At age 27, she was the first woman television station manager in the world. Since selling KOTV, Ms. Alvarez Smith has been a successful businessperson in radio, television, and real estate development in the San Diego, California area.
