Jim GilesFor 25 years, Jim Giles was a calming influence to his viewers in reporting and forecasting the unpredictable Oklahoma weather. As a meteorologist, he recognized the important role he played in protecting life and property.

Jim’s passion for meteorology began in the 1960’s while in the Air Force as a weather commander in Vietnam, where pilot’s lives depended on his accuracy. Jim started his broadcast career at radio and television stations in Dallas and Austin. He was named Chief Meteorologist at KOTV Tulsa, in 1981. In April 1991, Jim introduced Northeastern Oklahoma to Doppler 6 Radar and Pathfinder; just three days later, devastating tornadoes swept across the area. His coverage was credited with saving countless lives. He was an advocate of new and advanced weather forecasting technology. Throughout the years, Jim Giles’ efforts have been recognized professionally with an Emmy and numerous awards from various organizations.

Jim’s sense of community service was exemplary. His “Giles’ Coats for Kids” has donated over 200,000 coats to Oklahomans in need since 1986. And since 1993, “Jim Giles’ Wild, Wild Weather” shows have traveled the state educating over 125,000 people on how to protect themselves during severe weather.

Oklahoma lost a great broadcaster in December of 2006 with Jim’s passing. The hallmark of Jim’s career will be his tireless efforts to keep Oklahomans safe. As a viewer in Rock City, Oklahoma stated so succinctly, “We appreciate you keeping us informed all those years. You can come to our house for dinner anytime.”
